Dr. Sergio Musmanni
President
Colegio de Químicos de Costa Rica
San José, Costa Rica

Dear Dr. Musmanni:

In December 2006 representatives from the American Chemical Society, the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the Chemical Society of Japan, the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, the Korean Chemical Society, and the Chinese Chemical Society met and formally agreed to cosponsor The 2010 International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies, also known as Pacifichem 2010. The Canadian Society for Chemistry is the host society for the Congress. As chairman it is my pleasure to invite the Colegio de Químicos de Costa Rica to be an Official Participating Organization of Pacifichem 2010. The cosponsoring societies believe that a significant reason for the success of the previous Pacifichem conferences has been the involvement of other societies in the Pacific Basin and the participation of their members.

An Official Participating Organization will have no financial responsibility. However, Official Participating Organizations are expected to use their normal methods of communication to inform their members about Pacifichem 2010, the general outline of the scientific program, how to submit papers to be considered for presentation during the Congress, and how to register in advance and request reservations for accommodations. Important benefits to members of the Official Participating Organizations are they may register for the Congress at the discounted member rate and submit papers. Additional information can be found on the Pacifichem website, www.pacifichem.org. In order to facilitate communication among the cosponsoring societies and participating organizations it would be very helpful if you can provide the name and address of an officer who will continue in office during the next few years, such as the Secretary-General, the Executive Secretary or the Executive Director.

Pacifichem 2010 will be the sixth in the series of very successful Pacifichem Congresses. The most recent of these, Pacifichem 2005, attracted over 11,500 registrants representing 67 countries, and more than 11,000 technical papers were presented. The theme of Pacifichem 2010 is chemistry, technology and our global society. The Congress will promote scientific exchange in the pacific basin for a healthy and sustainable future. The program will highlight recent contributions by chemical scientists that improve the quality of life in the Pacific Basin and throughout the world, as well as identify opportunities and challenges for the future.

Symposia will be organized in the thirteen topical areas shown below. More information on the technical program can be found on the Pacifichem website, http://www.pacifichem.org

Cooperation among the countries is essential to the welfare of the peoples of the Pacific Basin.  Collaboration in Pacifichem 2010 is an excellent way to promote that cooperation.  We believe that members of the Colegio de Químicos de Costa Rica will be important contributors to the Congress in December 2010, and we hope that you will join us as an Official Participating Organization.  An early reply will be appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

Prof. Howard Alper
Congress Chairman
